I go barefoot nearly all the time as a health and lifestyle choice. I've been doing it for all of a month (it's 19 June 2009), so I'm afraid I haven't got any amazingly tough soles to show you. From The Society for Barefoot Living, the least you need to know about going barefoot:
It is healthy for your feet to go barefoot.
It is not against the law to go barefoot into any kind of establishment including restaurants.
It is also not against any health department regulation.
At the Dallas Arboretum, where I volunteer weekly (in theory; I forget about 3/4 of my scheduled days)
On DART buses and trains, except for a few touchy drivers for whom I put on the house slippers until they can't see my feet anymore. I still get odd looks, but either no one cares or there's no policy. There is a sort of policy. I think. See DART below. Mostly it's that no one cares.
At the Walmart Neighbourhood Market down the street, though unfortunately not at the big Walmart. See the second story below.
Those are about all the places I go or services I use often enough to have any statistical weight here. I can't say anything about restaurants as I rarely go out to eat.
